12th October 2017 Hiking - Walking: Alresford to Wivenhoe Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 6 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Thursday 12th October – walk 6 miles ***** Alresford to Wivenhoe – sunny periods. Good night in our little carpark just outside Alresford off the road to the creek and the wind dropped during the night:) Relaxing start with only a couple of cement mixer lorries passing, a dog walker or two and the friendly farmer. After a read, followed by breakfast we took the footpath down past the hollow oak to the River Colne. The path runs on the sea wall to Wivenhoe and then to Colchester, we will bike this route in the future as it is perfect for bikes:) At first it passes through trees and then opens up to farmland and with the tide out the mud was covered in waders, mainly the large Godwits feeding. On nearing Wivenhoe we passed another quarry on the far bank with rusty old barges on the quay which looked like they were still being used but I have never seen them on the water while sailing at Point Clear. Then past the sailing club and large tidal barrier which apparently has been shut 17 times this year and most recently last week! We have never been to Wivenhoe before and were impressed by its mixture of tastefully designed new housing and old bow windowed river front cottages. There was loads of small jetties with loads of boats resting in the mud. Building was going on the other side of the river and we later learnt the village is Rowhedge. The new houses which filled the waterfront were well maintained and not second homes many with outside furniture and potted plants:) We continued out the other side to see if there was a bridge, unfortunately not, the first bridge across the Colne is at Colchester. Essex University then comes into view and we were surprised just how close it is! Passing the nature reserve, we reach some more trees and turn right back into Wivenhoe coming out by the railway station. We have a look at the narrow streets of the old town including the church, its then back to the river walking out on the new public pontoon to take some pics. We then continued on the same path back to the van, a popular route with dog walkers, bird watchers and cyclists :) Back at the van we decided to drive the short distance down to the creek and parked up for lunch with great views, we love it here:) After a relax and a read we walk along the creek for a mile past the pretty cottage to some rotting boats in the mud for more pics. It was then time to head for home and I even managed to reverse my trailer into a driveway to turn around! So a nice two days away in Essex making it our second night out in the van this month. Tomorrow is looking promising for some more windsurfing in Felixstowe and getting mild for the weekend:) Photo Gallery Here |
